Will My Rent Ever Go Down?

The Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies and Enterprise Community Partners recently released a white paper, The Projecting Trends in Severely Cost-Burdened Renters, which outlined data that indicates rental rates will continue to rise over the next 10 years. This analysis finds that the number of households spending 50 percent or more of their income on rent is expected to rise at least 11 percent by 2025. At a time when rents are rising, incomes are not keeping up, and homeownership rates are declining, the number of renters facing affordability challenges has increased significantly. I love home improvement shows; I love the term “good bones”.  I watch intently as they discover mold in the kitchen, termites, rotting roofs, bad wiring. I feel I know every problem that may arise. I delight in seeing the successful half hour transformation, and the anticipation as the music swells to reveal a dream home complete with a perfectly furnished interior.
